Easy Southern Biscuits and Gravy

August 13, 2021

Nothing says southern like biscuits and gravy. I grew up watching my mom make everything from scratch including her homemade biscuits. Try as I might I have never been able to achieve the perfection of her warm and flaky flavor-filled concoction. I'm willing to admit it has become a lost art form and she never used a recipe that I remember. I'm sure it will become a family favorite at your home just like it is at ours. Warm, gooey, rich and hardly, this might just be the perfect southern comfort food. The recipe I am sharing with you guys today is an adaptation of my mom's southern biscuits and gravy with a few short cuts. Dare I call it a casserole? Sure let's go with that!

Biscuits and Gravy
Prep 20 minutes
Bake time 30 minutes
Makes 2 9x13 dishes

Ingredients
  • 2 16oz cans large buttermilk biscuits, cut in half. You can use frozen also.
  • 1 lb ground regular or spicy sausage
  • 6 tbsp flour
  • 1 tsp kosher salt
  • 1 tsp crushed black pepper
  • 5 C whole milk

Directions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees and spray cooking spray on both dishes, set aside
Lay one layer of the cut biscuits on the bottom of the dishes

Place in the preheated oven and bake for 10 minutes or until the biscuits are slightly golden brown
Using a large skillet over medium to high heat, ground the sausage until fully cooked

Mix in the 6 tbsp of flour until combined

Stir consistently until fully combined for about 3 minutes
Mix in the milk and stir until combined

Mix in the salt and pepper
Stirring consistently, cook until mixture comes to a slight boil and starts to thicken

Pour gravy over the bottom layer of biscuits

Top the top of the gravy with the uncooked biscuits

Place into the oven and bake for 25 minutes. Easy Southern Biscuits and Gravy is perfect for any meal and is a real crowd pleaser. The recipe is easy to double and is easily adaptable if you would like to add cheese or maybe a layer of scrambled eggs.
