Everyone loves traveling and even though modern-day travel is a far cry from the grand adventures that captured the global imagination at the turn of the century, there are still a few ways that we can rekindle the wonder of times gone by when traveling, and one of the best - is choosing a fabulous hotel, so while your wondering what gifts to give this holiday season, take a minute to think about a gift for yourself (and by extension your family too, of course) - your next hotel holiday.
The grand hotels of the past were not just vestibules to house the privileged when they sojourned to exotic and foreign locations, but they were also architectural masterpieces in their own right, and home to some of the brightest and best of society at the time.
Now, these days, mercifully travel has become far more accessible and that means that many of us are able to indulge our wanderlust, which perhaps this side of a few decades ago may well not have been the case and while the Coco Channel suite at the Ritz hotel in Paris remains out of grasp for most of us, we can still enjoy the grandeur of a fabulous hotel by taking some time to research the hidden gems that exist in our budgets and by knowing what to look for.
START WITH A PLAN
Every good idea needs a plan, so if you’re planning on treating your family (or yourself) to a grand hotel experience, what you first need to do is figure out where you’re going, for how long, who is coming with you, and how much money you’re prepared to spend. Remember, the more time you have to plan, the more time you have to save, and if you’re the patient sort, that could add up to 5-star opulence.
KNOW THE TYPE OF TRAVELLER YOU ARE
Honestly, the idea of evening martinis at the Regent may sound like it’s fun, but if you’re more casual-chic than über-city-slick, you’re not going to have a good time. It doesn’t mean that because your vacation address isn’t in the zip code, that it’s inferior - the truth is quite contrarian. Some of the best hotels in the United States are found off the beaten track and offer all of the grandeur of a big city location, with the hospitality, charm and style of a country retreat.

WHAT KIND OF HOLIDAYMAKER ARE YOU?
Do you prefer the theater to parasailing? Are you a high class casino roller or are you the “sit next to the lake with a good book” type? Do you fancy yourself a passenger on a train that Agatha Christie would have been no stranger to, or do you prefer the wide open spaces of America’s heartlands? You can of course be a combination of all of these things, but the point is to find the kind of location, budget and property that is going to give you the best experience.
It doesn’t matter if you’re planning a vacation for your family, or you’re looking for a romantic getaway (in which case you may want to check out Gatlinburg hotels with hotubs), America is a treasure chest of experiences, waiting just for you.
Safe travels, and Happy Holidays!
